The provider inserts a thin, flexible, lighted tubular instrument through the patient's mouth to examine the passage between the mouth and stomach (esophagus), the stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum); he inserts a stent through the endoscope into a narrowed area of the esophagus; before and after stent placement, he may insert a guidewire over which he passes dilators to widen the esophagus.
