The provider performs an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a diagnostic procedure that combines upper endoscopy and retrograde (reverse) injection of contrast material, a type of dye, into the biliary ducts; he also performs a sphincterotomy (incision to open up or enlarge the sphincter of Oddi) and/or a papillotomy (incision of the ampulla of Vater or hepatopancreatic duct, the union of the pancreatic and common bile ducts).
