The provider inserts a thin, flexible, lighted tubular instrument through the patient's mouth to examine the passage between the mouth and stomach (esophagus), stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). He also performs a complete or partial fundoplasty where he wraps the gastric fundus around the esophagus for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux. The procedure may include duodenoscopy.
