Rheumatoid arthritis patients who are on disease modifying antirheumatic drug therapy are at a higher risk for reactivation of a latent tuberculosis infection. Latent tuberculosis means that the patient is infected with the tuberculosis bacteria (TB) however, the patient does not have active tuberculosis. The provider screens the rheumatoid arthritis patient for TB before starting a disease–modifying antirheumatic drug therapy.
