In this procedure, the provider surgically creates a shunt between the superior vena cava and the right pulmonary artery diverting deoxygenated blood directly to both the lungs. A shunt forms the bypass channel or passageway in the blood circulation connecting two blood vessels and diverting blood from one region to the other. The provider performs this procedure so that blood bypasses the defective right chamber of the heart and reaches directly into the lungs through the pulmonary artery for oxygenation. This procedure is also known as bidirectional Glenn procedure.
