In this procedure, the provider opens the chest to repair the narrowed and stiff mitral valve. The mitral valve controls the passage of blood from the left atrium, which is the collecting chamber, to the left ventricle, which is the pumping chamber. The provider releases the stiff valve while the patient is under the control of an artificial heart–lung machine.
