The provider examines the tissue inside the knee joint with an arthroscope to identify areas of osteochondritis dissecans, where the cartilage separates from underlying bone. She excises a portion of the lesion and drills damaged cartilage to encourage growing bone to reattach. She applies bone grafts and in some cases inserts screws to hold the cartilage in place. The procedure relieves pain and improves mobility in the joint.
