In this procedure, the provider performs an open treatment of a femoral fracture between, around, or below the trochanters. He fixes the fracture using an intramedullary implant, or an implant the provider places inside the canal of the femur to stabilize the fractured bones. He may also use interlocking screws and or cerclage, a metal band or wire loop, that the provider wraps around the fragments to help hold the fracture fragments in place.
