The provider repairs a fracture or dislocation of the odontoid, or first cervical vertebra, the uppermost neck bone, from its normal attachment to the second cervical vertebra. The provider accesses the odontoid through an incision in the front of the neck. He uses internal fixation and bone grafting to repair the vertebra. Odontoid fractures, the most common cervical spine fractures, typically result from trauma to the neck.
