In mandibular osteomyelitis, the mandible, or lower jaw bone, and its surrounding soft tissue become inflamed due to a bacterial infection, such as Staphylococcus aureus, which may have spread from an infected tooth. An abscess cavity, or pocket of infection, in the bone may result. The provider cleans the area and removes infected or dead bone tissue to control the infection and prevent further spread.
