The provider removes tongs or a halo that another provider applied. Halos and tongs apply traction, or pulling force, to correct a spinal deformity, such as scoliosis, an abnormal rightward or leftward curvature of the spine. A halo is a ring shaped device made of steel, and a tong is a U shaped device. The provider applies weighted traction to the halo or tong over time until proper alignment of the bones is achieved. The provider then removes the halo or tongs.
