Using an open (laparotomy) technique, the provider transplants pancreatic beta islet cells from the patient’s own pancreas or a donor source to stimulate insulin production in a patient with diabetes. He infuses the cells into the portal vein of the liver through a tube that he inserts through an incision in the abdomen. All imaging, imaging guidance, and radiological supervision and interpretation are included with this procedure.
