The provider implants a prosthetic mitral valve, or replaces one, through a catheter that he inserts through a small incision in the skin and which he threads through a vessel to the heart; he may or may not puncture the wall between the ventricle and atrium in order to place the valve. The procedure is performed to treat mitral valve prolapse or malfunction.
