50949: Does Lap Procedure Automatically Mean Unlisted?

Question: I'm trying to decide how to code for a laparoscopic transureteroureterostomy. If I was coding an open procedure I would use CPT 50770. Should I use the unlisted procedure code and if I use that code what code would I equate it to for the value? Answer: You are on the right track. There is no specific CPT Code to describe a laparoscopic transureteroureterostomy. Therefore, you should use the unlisted code for the ureter (50949, Unlisted laparoscopy procedure, ureter). Bench mark your code to the open procedure code: 50770 (Transureteroureterostomy, anastomosis of ureter to contralateral ureter). Remember: You should be ready to supply a detailed operative report and have also a covering letter explaining what you did and why and detail again in layman's terms the procedure that your urologist performed. Ask for 50 percent more than the open procedure may pay.
