Reader Question:

Stop Yourself Before Reporting Urolift Implant Removal

Question: A patient had implants placed in 2016. Our urologist just performed a TURP on the patient and removed his four urolift implants. Is there a CPT® code for removal of the implants? If so, what is it?

Answer: Urolift implantation is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require an incision, so CPT® does not include a code for the implant removal. The procedure 52315 (Cystourethroscopy, with removal of foreign body, calculus, or ureteral stent from urethra or bladder (separate procedure); complicated) is included in either the E/M service otherwise provided to the patient or the TURP procedure performed (52601). There is no way to code implant removals separately with any modifier.
