Reader Questions:

Open Placement Changes S/P Tube Coding

Question: How should I report a cystoscopy and SP tube placement?

South Dakota Subscriber

Answer: You should report 51102 (Aspiration of bladder; with insertion of suprapubic catheter) for the suprapubic (S/P) percutaneous placement of a bladder drainage tube. You can also report 52000 (Cystourethroscopy [separate procedure]) since your urologist also performed a cystoscopy.

Caveat: If your urologist instead performed a formal open placement of a S/P tube, you would report 51040 (Cystostomy, cystotomy with drainage) instead of 51102. You cannot separately report 52000 with this code.
