Include Nephrostomy Tube Removal with Stent Placement

Question: What would be the appropriate code for antegrade stent placement with removal of nephrostomy tube? Illinois SubscriberAnswer: Report CPT 50393 (Introduction of ureteral catheter or stent into ureter through renal pelvis for drainage and/or injection, percutaneous) for the antegrade stent placement.Don't miss: If your urologist also used radiological control when placing the stent, report 74480 (Introduction of ureteral catheter or stent into ureter through renal pelvis for drainage and/or injection, percutaneous, radiological supervision and interpretation) or 76942 (Ultrasonic guidance for needle placement ...) in addition to 50393.There would be no additional code for the removal of the nephrostomy tube. This would be included in the antegrade stent placement.
