Question: Does code 50948 require cystoscopy with stent placement? If the urologist placed a stent without a cystoscopic examination, would I use 50947?

Answer: Yes, 50947 (Laparoscopy, surgical; ureteroneocystostomy with cystoscopy and ureteral stent placement) includes cystoscopy with the placement of a stent as the code descriptor indicates.
Placement of a stent during the laparoscopic procedure (not via cystoscopy) would be included in the procedure code and not separately billable. In this case, you would report 50948 (Laparoscopy, surgical; ureteroneocystostomy without cystoscopy and ureteral stent placement), which would include laparoscopic placement of the stent.
