Conquer Ileal Conduit Catheter Replacement Case

Question: The urologist exposed the area of the ileal conduit ostomy by removing the patient’s appliance. Digital manipulation showed that the small finger was admitted into the ostomy with no difficulty. The urologist inserted a 16-French catheter and put 3-4 cc of water in the balloon. The ostomy appliance was replaced with the catheter draining into the bag. What CPT® code would I use in this case?

Answer: The ileal conduit represents a substitute bladder. So, per CPT®’s rules, you should bill as if it was a bladder. You should report code 51702 (Insertion of temporary indwelling bladder catheter; simple (eg, Foley)) on your claim.
