Reader Question:

Turn to Separate Codes for Tests Without a Panel

Question: The urologist ordered a 24-hour urine collection to assess calcium, oxalate, citrate, magnesium, uric acid, pH, total volume, sodium, phosphorus, and protein levels. Is there a panel code to use or should these be billed out separately?

Answer: The current CPT® manual does not include a single code that represents all the panels you mention, so you will need to report each one individually using the following codes:

  • 81050 – Volume measurement for timed collection, each
  • 82507 – Citrate
  • 84560 – Uric acid; other source
  • 83986 – pH; body fluid, not otherwise specified
  • 84300 – Sodium; urine
  • 83735 – Magnesium
  • 84105 – Phosphorus inorganic (phosphate); urine
  • 84166 – Protein; electrophoretic fractionation and quantitation, other fluids with concentration (eg, urine, CSF)
  • 83945 – Oxalate.
