Reader Question:

Retrieval Through Nephrostomy Tube

Question: Our physician performed a basket retrieval through an already existing nephrostomy tube. How can we bill for stone removal?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: For removal of the stone using renal endoscopy, use 50561 (renal endoscopy through established nephrostomy or pyelostomy, with or without irrigation, instillation, or ureteropyelography, exclusive of radiologic service; with removal of foreign body or calculus). For removal using a basket only, append modifier -52 (reduced services) to 50561.
