Reader Question:

Resecting Ureteral Stricture

Question: What code should we use for resecting a significantly traumatized ureteral stricture? The doctor performed a transureteral ureterostomy, connecting one ureter to the other.

Nevada Subscriber

Answer: If the physician performs a transureteral ureterostomy, connecting the two ureters, use 50770 (transureteroureterostomy, anastomosis of ureter to contralateral ureter). If, however, the ureter is left on the same side which is usually what happens use 50700 (ureteroplasty, plastic operation on ureter [e.g., stricture]).
