Reader Question:

Remember Modifier XS for a Separate Organ

Question: The urologist fragmented and extracted a left renal stone and extracted a left ureteral stone via ureteroscopy and placed a double J stent. How do I code this?

Answer: Submit 52356 (Cystourethroscopy, with ureteroscopy and/or pyeloscopy; with lithotripsy including insertion of indwelling ureteral stent [e.g., Gibbons or double-J type]) for the renal stone fragmentation, removal, and double J stent placement. Also report 52352 (Cystourethroscopy, with ureteroscopy and/or pyeloscopy; with removal or manipulation of calculus [ureteral catheterization is included]) with modifier XS (Separate structure) for the left ureteral stone removal. Modifier XS indicates the removal of a stone from a different location; in this case, the ipsilateral, same side, ureter.
