Question: Our surgeon performed a total nephrectomy and then a reimplantation of the same kidney, a renal autotransplantation. He wants to bill 50220 and 50380 together. Can these two codes be listed during the same surgery?

Answer: Yes, you can bill both of these codes during same surgery. Report 50380 (Renal autotransplantation, reimplantation of kidney) as the primary procedure and report secondary procedures such as the total nephrectomy (50220, Nephrectomy, including partial ureterectomy, any open approach including rib resection) with modifier 51 (Multiple procedures).
