Reader Question:

Prostate Intraepithelial Neoplasia

Question: What is the correct diagnosis code for prostate intraepithelial neoplasia?

Indiana Subscriber

Answer: The correct diagnosis code for prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) is 233.4 (carcinoma in situ of breast and genitourinary system; prostate). This code is payable for biopsy. Diagnosis code 236.5 (neoplasm of uncertain behavior of genitourinary system; prostate) should not be used unless there has been a biopsy that is telling you there is prostate cancer. Diagnosis code 239.5 (neoplasms of unspecified nature; other genitourinary organs) would not be correct either because it does not describe the condition of PIN as accurately.
