Urology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Injection during Anesthesia

Question: What is the correct coding for a collagen injection into the urethra under anesthesia?

Virginia Subscriber
Answer: Whether the service is performed in a hospital under anesthesia or in the office, bill 51715 (Endoscopic injection of implant material into the submucosal tissues of the urethra and/or bladder neck). Most carriers accept 625.6 (Pain and other symptoms associated with female genital organs). Others require 599.82 (Intrinsic [urethral] sphincter deficiency [ISD]). In the hospital, do not code for supplies. Check with your carrier for restrictions on using 51715.
