Reader Question:

Indocyanine Green Administration Is Part of Nephrectomy

Question: The urologist administered indocyanine green during a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy to help delineate the surrounding vasculature. What is the best way to code this?

Massachusetts Subscriber

Answer: The only code in CPT® 2017 for indocyanine green is 92240 (Indocyanine-green angiography [includes multiframe imaging] with interpretation and report, unilateral or bilateral) but this code represents an ophthalmology procedure, so is not appropriate in your case. When administered during a nephrectomy procedure, indocyanine green is considered part of the surgery and not separately billable. Simply report the nephrectomy.
