Reader Question:

Diagnostic Laparoscopy Could Be 49320

Question: The surgeon planned to perform a laparoscopic robotic sacrocolpopexy but was unable to. He only performed a diagnostic laparoscopy instead. What CPT® code should be used for this surgical scenario?

Answer: If your physician was only able to complete the diagnostic laparoscopy, report code 49320 (Laparoscopy, abdomen, peritoneum, and omentum, diagnostic, with or without collection of specimen[s] by brushing or washing [separate procedure]). If he was able to perform the laparoscopic surgical colpopexy, report 57425 (Laparoscopy, surgical, colpopexy [suspension of vaginal apex]) instead.
