Code 52700 Is for TUR, Not TURP

Question: The surgeon performed a TUR drainage of a prostatic abscess that he said should be diagnosed with N41.2. do I bill CPT® code 52601?

Answer: The correct procedure code for transurethral drainage of a prostate abscess is 52700 (Transurethral drainage of prostatic abscess). The code you are considering, 52601 (Transurethral electrosurgical resection of prostate, including control of postoperative bleeding, complete [vasectomy, meatotomy, cystourethroscopy, urethral calibration and/or dilation, and internal urethrotomy are included]), is for transurethral resection of the prostate. It is inappropriate for the prostatic abscess.

Include diagnosis N41.2 (Abscess of prostate) as your surgeon suggested.
