Reader Question:

Check Your Choices for Priaprism Takedown

Question: Does CPT® include a code for “priapism takedown” done at bedside or in an operating room?

Illinois Subscriber

Answer: You have four code choices in CPT® that might apply, depending on the exact procedure and place of service:

  • 54220 Irrigation of corpora cavernosa for priapism
  • 54420 – Corpora cavernosa corpus-saphenous vein shunt (priapism operation), unilateral or bilateral
  • 54430 – Corpora cavernosa-corpus spongiosum shunt (priapism operation), unilateral or bilateral
  • 54435 – Corpora cavernosa-glans penis fistulization (e.g., biopsy needle, Winter procedure, rongeur, or punch) for priapism.

The services of 54220 and 54435 are performed at the patient’s bedside or in the emergency room. Your physician will go to the hospital operating room to complete either 54420 or 54430.
