Check Before Coding Pelvic Exam Separately

Question: The urologist performed cystourethroscopy, removed the scope, and then performed a pelvic exam using a speculum. Can we bill for the pelvic exam? If so, what is the correct procedure code? West Virginia Subscriber Answer: The pelvic examination, code 57410 (Pelvic examination under anesthesia (other than local)) is only separately billable when that examination is the only exam/procedure performed and it is performed under general or reginal anesthesia. The pelvic examination is included with any other performed procedure, such as cystoscopy or gynecological procedures, at the same encounter and is not billable as a separate service in these circumstances.
