Reader Question:

Catheter as a Stand-alone Supply Is Not Separately Billable

Question: Can we bill for catheters if the patient couldn’t be catheterized? The patient was supposed to have full urodynamics studies done but couldn’t because the urologist couldn’t pass the catheter into the bladder because of a urethral stricture.

Answer: The catheter is considered a supply that all urologists would have in their office and, thus, is not a separately billable item. Since your physician used the catheter to perform a urodynamic study instead of for long-term use, you cannot bill it separately to a DMERO plan.
