Urology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Capture Cystogram Pay With 2 Codes

Question: What codes should I use for "on table cystogram" when the physician is looking for a fistula?Washington SubscriberAnswer: For the instillation of contrast into the bladder report code 51600 (Injection procedure for cystography or voiding urethrocystography). Then, for the reading and interpretation of three views of the cystogram, use code 74430 (Cystography, minimum of three views, radiological supervision and interpretation).  If performed in a facility such as in hospital, add modifier 26 (Professional component) to 74430 to indicate that the urologist is only providing the professional component, the interpretation of the films, and does not own the x-ray equipment being used, does not pay for the technician, nor the contrast material all of which are supplied by the facility.
