Answer 1: Here are the diagnosis codes that apply to the signs, symptoms, and final diagnosis for this patient:

burning on urination (dysuria): ICD-9 788.1

• frequency: ICD-9 788.41

• urgency: ICD-9 788.63

• microscopic hematuria: 599.72

• UTI: 599.0 (Urinary tract infection, site not specified).

ICD-9 2009 deleted 599.7 (Hematuria), which includes “Hematuria (benign), (essential).” Instead, you should be using three new, more specific ICD-9 codes: 599.70 (Hematuria, unspecified), 599.71 (Gross hematuria), and 599.72

(Microscopic hematuria).

Answer 2: B. You should report 209.24 (Malignant carcinoid tumor of the kidney). This year’s ICD-9 update includes two new codes: 209.24 and 209.64 (Benign carcinoid tumor of the kidney).

Answer 3: D. The Oct. 1, 2008, ICD-9 update deleted 259.5 (Androgen insensitivity syndrome), replacing it with three more specific codes:

• 259.50 -- Androgen insensitivity, unspecified

• 259.51 -- Androgen insensitivity syndrome

• 259.52 -- Partial androgen insensitivity.
