Instead of relying on the vague diagnosis code 600 (hyperplasia of prostate) listed in the 1999 and 2000 editions of ICD-9, urologists will be able to give a more specific diagnosis for prostate hyperplasia. The 2001 edition, which took effect Oct. 1, added a fourth digit to the 600 section. The fourth digit (600.x) is now a requirement for coding and getting paid for a 600 diagnosis.
Below are the new codes, as reported in the Aug. 1 final rule in the Federal Register:
600.0 hypertrophy (benign) of prostate
600.1 nodular prostate
600.2 benign localized hyperplasia of prostate
600.3 cyst of prostate
600.9 unspecified hyperplasia of prostate
