In the Vol. 6, No. 2 issue of Urology Coding Alert, the reader question titled “Choose 50590 or 52353 for Stone Fragmentation” stated that if the fragmentation was done via the ureteroscopic procedure, then you should code 52353 (Cystourethroscopy, with ureteroscopy and/or pyeloscopy; with lithotripsy [ureteral catheterization is included]) for the stone fragmentation. Then use 52332 (Cystourethroscopy, with insertion of indwelling ureteral stent [eg, Gibbons or double-J type]) for the stent placement. This is incorrect.
On Jan. 1, 2014, CPT® introduced new code 52356 (Cystourethroscopy, with ureteroscopy and/or pyeloscopy; with lithotripsy including insertion of indwelling ureteral stent [eg, Gibbons or double-J type]). That means you can only report 52356 in the scenario above, instead of 52353 and 52332 together.
