Technology & Innovation:

Learn How You Can Build Your AI Skills

Question: How can coders, auditors, and other personnel in the health information management (HIM) profession upskill themselves to adjust to working with artificial intelligence (AI)? Are there education courses or programs that can assist with training in some of the skills they’ll need?

Answer: “We all need to upskill ourselves whenever there’s new technology out there. If you get a new smartphone, there are different updates and features that you have to familiarize yourself with, so this isn’t a new concept,” shared Stephani Scott, CPC, RHIT, vice president of audit services at AAPC, during the “AI in the Exam Room: Transforming Physician Documentation with Generative Tools” session at AAPC’s DOCUCON 2025.

The internet is loaded with content and websites where you can educate yourself on AI. Several examples include:

  • AAPC courses and workshops
  • Podcasts
  • Educational videos

You could also attend local AAPC chapter meetings and connect with other HIM professionals to inquire as to what their organization’s plans for AI are.

Knowing how to use AI in your workflows is helpful, but understanding how the technology works is just as important. As a coder, auditor, or other HIM professional, using your critical thinking skills will help you decipher fact from fiction when it comes to working with AI.

“The human is in control, whether it be the physician accepting the note or doing the coding, or professional men and women who are approving the codes suggested by the AI,” said William Morris, MD, MBA, chief medical officer at Ambience Healthcare. “I assure you, those who are leaning in with eyes wide open, and being a little trusting but verifying, will see the positive and be able to kind of keep up with this tremendous moment,” Morris added.
