Can Providers Overcome Real-World Wearable Device Implementation Challenges?

Question: I read the February 2026 Revenue Cycle Insider article, “Unlock Access to Wearable Devices Through New CMS and FDA Programs,” and I’m curious about how healthcare providers might encourage patients to use wearable devices for remote physiologic monitoring.

What methods are physicians using?

Answer: That is a very good point — a wearable device not worn is useless. Researchers are exploring ways to encourage patients to regularly use wearable health devices.

For example, in 2025, Stephanie M. Carpenter, et al., completed a clinical trial testing gamification strategy with the BACtrack Skyn alcohol biosensor among young adults with HIV. Participants cared for a virtual pet in a smartphone app, earning points based on biosensor wear time. The study also tested incentive prompts, such as messages offering 100 game points or $1, and personalized feedback about biosensor adherence. The published trial results are expected in 2026.

This research matters because wearable programs only succeed when patients consistently wear the devices.
