Answer: Healthcare is one of the most attacked industries, and with good reason. The data that hackers can access is a treasure trove of information that can lead to further attacks on other industries and companies.

The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) released its first quarter 2024 Data Breach Report. The report shows 841 publicly reported data compromises from Q1 2024, which is a 53 percent increase from the 442 compromises during the same time period in 2023.

However, despite the greater number of compromises, the ITRC found 24,474,351 individuals were affected by Q1 2024 data breaches. This number is a reduction when compared to Q1 2023 and Q4 2023:

  • 72 percent decrease when compared to Q1 2023
  • 81 percent decrease when compared to Q4 2023

While the decrease in victims is a positive, the increased number of attacks has cybersecurity experts concerned. Cyberthreat actors are launching more targeted attacks, which means healthcare organizations, providers, and patients should stay vigilant about practicing good cyber hygiene.
