Detect OSA While Wearing a Watch When Patients Sleep

Question: I’ve had several patients come in for their annual wellness visit claiming to be frequently tired and not sleeping well. I referred them to a sleep specialist for a study, after which the patients were diagnosed with sleep apnea.

Are there devices that could preliminarily detect sleep apnea?

Answer: Yes, there are many devices on the market that can track a person’s sleep quality. One device that comes to mind is the Samsung Galaxy smartwatch. On February 9, 2024, Samsung announced the Galaxy watch received De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the watch’s sleep apnea feature.

The Samsung Health Monitor app, which is available on select Samsung Galaxy watch and phone models, can detect signs of sleep apnea in users who are older than 22 years old. The users must not be previously diagnosed with sleep apnea, too. Patients will wear the watch for more than four hours twice within a 10-day period, and the watch can detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.
