Answer: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is a revolutionary and quickly evolving technology that is sure to transform several industries, including healthcare. Healthcare organizations are exploring integrating AI into a number of specialties and areas, and one example of combining generative AI and documentation involves leaders in their respective industries.

On April 17, 2023, Microsoft and Epic announced a collaboration that pairs Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) systems with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service. The two companies have been working together for years, but this latest venture could be a game-changer for healthcare providers.

With Microsoft’s generative AI system incorporated into Epic’s EHR system, healthcare providers can enjoy increased productivity and optimal patient care. According to the press release, OpenAI’s technology could help increase the potential and capabilities of Epic’s SlicerDicer. The AI algorithms will be able to populate any missing information automatically into the EHR, so the provider can spend more time focused on the patient. The medical record will be more accurate and complete to ensure high-quality care and treatment.

The collaboration is “making it easier for healthcare organizations to identify operational improvements, including ways to reduce costs and to find answers to questions locally and in a broader context,” said Seth Hain, senior vice president of research and development at Epic in a press release.

Currently, integrations are underway at several organizations, including UC San Diego Health, UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin, and Stanford Health Care.
