Question: I work with a lot of veterans who suffer from chronic pain, mental health issues, or require occupational therapy. Are there technology-based treatment options for these patients? Washington D.C. Subscriber Answer: Yes, there are technology-based treatment options for veterans suffering from several different conditions, and virtual reality (VR) is one option that’s gaining traction with veterans. The Veteran Affairs (VA) Office of Healthcare Innovation and Learning (OHIL) started a three-year partnership with Penumbra in April 2023 to explore VR solutions. The REAL System y-Series VR platform is used primarily for chronic pain management, chronic condition management, neurorehabilitation, and orthopedics. The VA believes veterans will have better access to care by integrating VR into traditional healthcare. During the partnership, the VR systems will be available at six VA sites across the U.S.
