Respiratory Care Provider Faces Lawsuits Over Data Breach

From July 23 to July 27, 2021, an unknown party accessed certain systems of SuperCare Health’s network. A forensic investigation uncovered that 318,379 individuals’ health records were breached.

“We have no reason to believe that any information was published, shared, or misused as a result of this incident,” said SuperCare Health in a March 2022 statement on their website.

According to the respiratory care provider, the data accessed varied between individuals, but may include the following:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Hospital or medical group
  • Medical record number
  • Patient account number
  • Health insurance information
  • Information related to testing, diagnoses, and treatments
  • Claim information
  • Other health-related information

The provider added, “For a small subset of individuals, their Social Security number and/or driver’s license number may have been contained in the impacted files.”

As a result, the healthcare provider has been hit with multiple lawsuits in April 2022. Plaintiffs in the lawsuits claim that SuperCare Health failed to take adequate and reasonable measures to protect its data systems in the face of increased healthcare industry ransomware attacks and data breaches preceding the unauthorized breach.
