On May 25, 2023, the American Medical Association (AMA) and Health Level Seven® (HL7®) announced a new collaboration between the two organizations. According to the >AMA press release, technology developers who use HL7 data interoperability standards and guides will enjoy greater access to AMA-published codes and descriptors, including the AMA CPT® code set. The CPT® code set will integrate fully with HL7’s Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) “to advance the organizations’ mutual goal of promoting the efficient exchange of interoperable health information,” stated the AMA. For more than a decade, the AMA and HL7 have collaborated to support health data interoperability standardization, and this alliance continues that work.
“By working toward greater CPT® accessibility for developers, the collaboration between AMA and HL7 allows the use of CPT® in the development and testing of FHIR-based technology to further advance the next generation of health information solutions,” said James Madara, MD, executive vice president and CEO of the AMA. HL7 announced publication of FHIR Release 5 (FHIR R5) in April 2023. According to an HL7 press release, the FHIR R5 “is a ‘trial use’ standard that retains prior mature, normative content while incorporating enhancements that are ready for implementation and feedback.” The new release also includes several benefits for healthcare providers and their patients, such as:
