Turn To 82331 for ASVS

Question: How can we code for an intra-arterial calcium stimulation test? A blood sample was taken from the right hepatic vein, then calcium gluconate was injected into the SMA and then blood samples taken from the right hepatic vein at 20, 40 and 60 seconds after the calcium injection.

Answer: The best code for you is 82331 (Calcium; after calcium infusion test). The intra-arterial calcium stimulation test is used for the detection for insulinomas. Many insulinomas are less than 2 mm in size and are easily missed on imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT scans and MRIs. In the calcium stimulation test, calcium is injected as a secretagogue and blood samples are collected from the hepatic veins. This technique is also called arterial stimulation and venous sampling (ASVS).
