READER QUESTIONS:

Follow 3D's 'Physician Supervision' Rule

Question: CPT Codes Changes states that the 3D codes 76376 and 76377 require concurrent physician supervision. What does this mean?

Michigan Subscriber
Answer: The AMA recently clarified that “concurrent physician supervision” for codes 76376 (3D rendering with interpretation and reporting of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, or other tomographic modality; not requiring image postprocessing on an independent workstation) and 76377 (… requiring image postprocessing on an independent workstation) means active participation in and monitoring of the process (determining anatomic features to display and images to archive, etc.).

The term doesn’t correlate to CMS’ physician fee schedule supervision definitions, which relate to the physician’s physical location.
