Don’t Forget a 2nd Code for SIS Procedures

Question: What is a “SIS” procedure and how do I report the service?

Louisiana Subscriber

Answer: A saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS) is an ultrasound of the patient’s uterus where the radiologist introduces sterile saline into the uterus through the cervix using a sonohysterographic catheter. A radiologist performs the procedure to evaluate the uterus for several conditions, including:

  • Abnormal uterus shape
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine polyps

You’ll assign 76831 (Saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS), including color flow Doppler, when performed) to report a SIS procedure. If the provider introduces saline during the procedure, then you’ll need a second code, such as 58340 (Catheterization and introduction of saline or contrast material for saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS) or hysterosalpingography), to report that portion of the encounter.
