Correctly Code a CT Cystography Procedure

Question: I have an op note that lists the procedure as a computed tomography (CT) cystogram with contrast.

Can you tell me what code to assign?

Answer: Reporting a CT cystogram can be a tricky task, but it can be easier with the following information.

You’ll need to report multiple CPT® codes to ensure reimbursement for a CT cystogram procedure. Typically, you will need to code the contrast administration followed by the CT scan.

To report the insertion of the urinary catheter through the urethra into the bladder followed by the contrast material injection, you’ll use CPT® code 51600 (Injection procedure for cystography or voiding urethrocystography). Next, you’ll assign 74430 (Cystography, minimum of 3 views, radiological supervision and interpretation) to report the cystography procedure. Lastly, assign 72193 (Computed tomography, pelvis; with contrast material(s)) for the CT scan with contrast.

Beware: Some providers may try to bill with 51600 and 72194 (Computed tomography, pelvis; without contrast material, followed by contrast material(s) and further sections), but 72194 is for intravenous (IV) or injection contrast only.
