Reader Question:

Report 74430 for Bladder Cystography

Question: Which code should we report when we perform bladder cystography? Arizona Subscriber Answer: You should report one unit of 74430 (Cystography, minimum of three views, radiological supervision and interpretation) for the imaging portion, even if the radiologist obtains multiple images. Sometimes the radiologist takes several films as the bladder is filling and several films of the empty bladder because the residual volume may provide valuable information. Because the descriptor refers to a "minimum of three views," you should report 74430 only once.

Along with the imaging code, radiologists who inject the contrast media may also report one of two codes: 51600* (Injection procedure for cystography or voiding urethrocystography) or 51605 (Injection procedure and placement of chain for contrast and/or chain urethrocystography). Code 51600 is a starred procedure, which means services include only the surgical procedure. Routine follow-up care is not part of a global package, so you should report it separately.
