Reader Question:

Report 37620 for IVC Filter Placement

Question: How should I report an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement?

South Carolina Subscriber Answer: The appropriate procedural code is CPT 37620 (Interruption, partial or complete, of inferior vena cava by suture, ligation, plication, clip, extravascular, intra-vascular [umbrella device]). You should also report 75940 (Percutaneous placement of IVC filter, radiological supervision and interpretation) for the radiologist's radiological supervision.

Append modifier -26 (Professional component) to 75940 to show the insurer that you did not supply the equipment for the procedure, assuming you provided the service in a facility setting.
